Marcus Garvey, the Black Star Line, and Limón’s Legacy

Limón, Costa Rica, played a key role in Pan-African history through its connection to Marcus Garvey and the UNIA. Garvey, the Jamaican-born activist, founded the Black Star Line to promote Black economic independence and connect the diaspora with Africa. Limón’s Afro-Caribbean community embraced this vision, helping spread UNIA ideals across Central America and the Caribbean.

Today, Puerto Viejo and Limón still preserve this legacy with one of the world’s only remaining Liberty Halls, gifted by the UNIA as a center for community and culture. Visiting this historic site connects travelers to over 100 years of Afro-Caribbean heritage and global Black history.

Founder

Sadie is a proud Afro-Costa Rican “Tica” with over 10 years of experience in the tourism industry. Since first stepping into the lush vegetation of Costa Rica, she fell in love. After that, she spent as much time as she could discovering all the diverse regions of her mother’s ancestral homeland. As her understanding of the country grew, she wanted to give access to underrepresented travelers like herself looking for similar unique experiences. Thus, she founded Soul Life Travel to create culturally competent tours highlighting the Afro-Costa Rican spirit.
